"Are You A Veteran?"
Isn't it grand that we have dedicated one day each year as Veteran' s Day; a day to honor all the veterans of American military service. We have so many freedoms in this land that we often do not know where to begin to appreciate them and we owe them all, in a very big way, to the American service veteran. From the first war for independence to the current wars around the globe, the American military person has been the "boots on the ground" and, as such, has been the one in harm's way through it all. A veteran is one who can truly say, "Been there, done that!"
As I was thinking about Veteran's Day and what the veterans mean to all of us, it occurred to me that there is another rank of veterans of which we should all want to be a part. We should all stand in judgment as veterans of God's army. We are in a war, you know. The apostle, Paul, said to Timothy (and by extension, to us), "You, therefore must endure hardship as a good soldier of Jesus Christ. No one engaged in warfare entangles himself with the affairs of this life, that he may please Him who enlisted him as a soldier." 2 Timothy 2:3, 4 If you are a baptized believer, Christ enlisted you in His army. I can imagine that when we stand before the great Judge of all we might be asked, "Are you a veteran of My army?" How will you answer? Just as all the veterans that have served in the military can say, "Been there, done that!" we will need to be able to say that also. Being a veteran implies participation...it implies a personal mission...a willingness to risk something.
We are in a fight. Peter warns us to "Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour. Resist him, steadfast in the faith, knowing that the same sufferings are experienced by your brotherhood in the world." 1 Peter 5:8, 9 So there you go...we know who our Commander is and we know who our enemy is.
Let's all join the ranks of God's army so that we can say, with one another, "Yes, we are veterans!"
