"Story: "The Church"

Recently, I read the following story in an e-mail that I received. I think that it describes, in a very special way, that everyone of us needs every other one of us.

Once a little boy who had lost a hand visited a Bible class. The teacher dealt well with the situation until the end of the class. She put her hands together for a familiar finger play and said, "Let's make the church." In this children's finger play, the hand and fingers first form a church building, then a steeple on the building, and finally the people in the building. She suddenly realized that the little boy could not participate. As she wondered what to do, a little girl in the class moved over to the boy, put one of her hands with his, and said, "Let's make the church together." Though each of us is part of an independent, autonomous congregation, we still need to join hands and "make the church together."

What a touching story, and yet, one that fitly describes the workings of the "body of Christ," the church. The apostle Paul said as much in Ephesians 4:16 "…from whom (Christ) the whole body, joined and knit together by what every joint supplies, according to the effective working by which every part does its share, causes growth of the body for the edifying of itself in love." This is God's recipe for church growth and it all hinges on every member having and job and every member doing that job well. Not only does it bring growth to the body but it brings the body together and holds it together in love.
