"How Much Does God Love You?"
On March 30, 1996, a homeless calico cat was caring for her five kittens, just four weeks old, in an abandoned
garage in Brooklyn, New York. The building was a suspected crack house and it suddenly went up in flames.
Firefighters worked to extinguish the fire and then noticed a badly scorched cat slowly carrying a kitten
from the building and then going back in for another. Her eyes were blistered shut, her paws and ears severely
burned, her coat singed and most of her facial hair gone. After she brought out her fifth kitten, she was seen
touching each one with her nose, as if to take a head count. Satisfied that she'd rescued them all, she then
collapsed and became unconscious.
Firefighter David Giannelli took the whole family to an animal clinic for treatment. One kitten died a month
later, but the cat they named Scarlett and her other four kittens were treated for three months and then put
up for adoption. Their story received worldwide media attention and over 7,000 people inquired about adopting
the family. The story grew and was covered by Oprah, Animal Planet and CNN.
I came across this true story of love and caring when I ran across the article in which it was reported that
Scarlett passed away on October 11, 2008 at the age of 13.
In Luke 12:6-7 our Lord said, "Are not five sparrows sold for two copper coins? And not one of them is forgotten
before God. But the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Do not fear therefore..." The story of Scarlett
is a touching story, indeed, but do you know that you are loved and cared for with a capacity greater than she
could ever show. God never loses track of His children. He went to the greatest length imaginable to save you
and me from certain, spiritual death. He sent His Son, one of the Godhead, to come to this world and save us.
How much love does that display?
"For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but
have everlasting life." John 3:16
