"Extending the Thanksgiving"
One more note on thanksgiving... As the children of Israel left Egyptian bondage and crossed the Red Sea, they sang a song in Exodus 15. "The Lord is my strength and song, and He has become my salvation; He is my God, and I will praise Him" is an excerpt found in verse 2. God had led them safely across the Sea and caused Pharaoh's army to be swallowed up by the water. They were full of joy and thanksgiving because of their recent successes. Three days later, after they had passed through the Wilderness of Shur with no water, they came to Marah. However, they were unable to drink its water because it was bitter. They began to complain to Moses. God, in response to Moses' request, made the water sweet to drink by having a tree cast into the waters. God told the children of Israel, "If you diligently heed the voice of the Lord your God and do what is right in His sight, give ear to His commandments and keep all His statues, I will put none of the diseases on you which I have brought on the Egyptians. For I am the Lord who heals you" (Ex. 15:26).
God made a promise to the children of Israel to take care of them and heal them of any of their infirmities. He displayed His ability to do anything for them by miraculously turning the bitter water sweet. We all know that not too many days passed again when they began complaining that there was no food. They claimed that Moses had brought them out of Egypt to have them die of hunger in the wilderness. The song of thankfulness and the promises that God had made to them were soon forgotten.
Last week we all enjoyed the Thanksgiving Day holiday with our families and friends. It is the time of year when being thankful for what we have is on our minds. But, as I mentioned on Wednesday evening in our Thanksgiving devotional, there are 365 days in the year and gratitude is a quality that is commended by our Lord, in scripture. Let us learn from the Israelites that God will not forget us, and He is always looking out for us. As we come to the end of the holiday week, let's all plan to move from Thanksgiving to Thanks-living and have a spirit of thankfulness every day.
