"Give Thanks"


Thanksgiving Day is one of our more important, if not one of the most important holidays. At least, our attention is drawn, for one day, to a spirit of thankfulness. A day during which we are encouraged to dwell on that for which we are thankful.

We live in an environment that makes it very easy for us to take for granted some of the most basic needs over which we have no control and yet, they are always at our disposal. We can flip a switch and light a room. We can turn on the water and have hot or cold at our discretion. We can decide which automobile in which we will ride; and if we run low on gas we can just pull into a filling station and buy some more...without having to pay immediately, if we so choose. I tend to take these things for granted...that they will always be there. Taking tangible things for granted, in this life, is a mistake. As so many have learned, by the hardest, all these thing can disappear overnight.

We have permanent benefits for which to be thankful. We can be thankful that, for the baptized believer, we have been cleansed from our sins. We can be thankful that we have the promise of a heavenly place of residence for eternity. Things might not be so rosy for everyone in this life, but in the next life they can be awesome. Jesus said in John 14:2 "...In My Father's house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also." It's a promise...that if we live for Him all the days of our lives we will have it. And if we live for him all the days of our lives we cannot lose it. The world can't take it away from us.

Let's give thanks for all things (Ephesians 5:20), but especially that God has made a way for all of us be with Him for eternity. HAPPY THANKGIVING!
