"Food for Thought"
I used this story in my sermon last Sunday evening and some suggested that I put it in the bulletin. I do not know to whom
the story is credited, but it makes its point in a very powerful way.
A family of four arose one Sunday morning to find the ground snow-covered and the temperature well below zero. As always
the mother and children proceeded to get ready for Sunday school and worship services while the dad just sat in his easy
chair watching the snow fall and sipping his coffee. The mother asked him, as she did every Sunday, "Honey will you go
with us today?" He answered, as he did every Sunday, "No, that story of Jesus, the Son of God, coming to earth as a human
to save humans from the wrath of God, which they couldn't understand, is just too much for me to believe."
The mother and two children went off to Sunday school and the dad stayed home, looking out the window, when he noticed
three little birds huddled together in the snow. He thought, "those birds will freeze to death if they do not get to
someplace warm. He put on his coat and boots and went outside to herd the little birds into the barn, and safety. When
he got back in the house he looked out the window and there they were back in the same place, huddled together. He said
to himself, "They are just birds and do not understand what will happen to them if they stay there in the snow." After
thinking on how he might save them, he reasoned, "If I could just be a bird for a little while, I could go out there and
explain to them their plight and tell them what they need to do to save themselves." After dwelling on the implications
of that thought, Sunday mornings would never be the same at their house again.
