"FOLLOW HIM"

The apostle Peter writes "For to this you were called, because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that you should follow His steps" (1 Peter 2:21).

It's true, in almost every new undertaking in our lives we have, most likely, followed the lead of another who had more experience than did we It may not have been apparent to us at the time, but we most likely did. When I got my first job, at Plaza Esso (changed to Exxon, that summer), in Columbia, Tennessee, I watched another fellow who had the same job as I, and I did what he did. When I joined the Army and got to basic training, at Ft. Jackson, South Carolina, I probably watched some others and followed their lead.

As Christians we need an example and the greatest example is our Savior, Jesus Christ. In William Ogden's old song, "Where He Leads, I'll Follow" the words, "He the great example is, and pattern for me" are in two of the stanzas.

In our scripture reading, we see one of the greatest examples in all of history. Jesus, the creator and sustainer of the universe, stooped down and washed the feet of His disciples. They had been arguing about rank in the kingdom and Jesus, by His example, showed them greatness by His standard.

In Philippians 2:7 Paul tells us that "He made Himself of no reputation." One problem with too many of us is that we are "full of ourselves." I suppose it is more pleasant to be served, than to serve, but Jesus said, "For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serveā€¦" (Mark 10:45).

When Jesus washed the feet of His disciples, He told them that He had given them an example. They did not seem to understand His message about true greatness, so He drove the lesson home by this example. The world has one standard of greatness and Jesus has another standard. We may not understand it, but no one can misunderstand the example.
