"Do You Ever Blush?"
In the early 1970s, psychiatrist Karl Menninger wrote a book entitled Whatever Became of Sin? Years after Dr. Menninger's
death, his question still remains. In fact, it's double underlined and highlighted in yellow marker. Just glance at the
headlines...watch the news broadcasts...flip the TV channels...gaze at your internet home page. We can see the loss of
shame on an epic scale. Once as I was surfing on the TV I ran across two large, half-naked women cursing and pummeling
each other on the stage of a TV studio to the chant of the audience, Jer-ee...Jer-ee! Where will it all end.
Is it true? Has the concept of sin, and it's considerable consequences departed from our society, as a whole.
The escape from the notion of sin is not new to the "baby-boomers" and "generation X'ers." Jeremiah, the prophet
of the Old Testament, was inspired to write (concerning Judah) some 2600 years ago; "Were they ashamed when they
had committed abomination? No! They were not at all ashamed; Nor did they know how to blush. Therefore they shall
fall among those who fall; At the time I punish them, They shall be cast down," says the LORD." (Jeremiah 6:15 NKJV)
Just as the people of Israel during the time of the Judges, mankind has gone through the cycle of rebellion, rejection,
restitution and restoration many times. God's people rebelled against Him and He would reject them and withdraw His blessings
from them. Then they would come to their senses and return, make restitution and ask for forgiveness. God forgave them and
restored them to fellowship with Him...every time. The problem is that, like the people of old, the cycles last for many
years, even decades or longer and no one knows when time will expire.
When will we, as a society, return to God and a standard of moral conduct that is in keeping with His will? Well, I'm
afraid that I'm not smart enough to answer that question. There is, however, one thing I'm sure of. It begins with me.
The next verse in Jeremiah 6 says, "Thus says the LORD: "Stand in the ways and see, And ask for the old paths, where the
good way is, And walk in it; Then you will find rest for your souls."
Our ability to "blush" will only come back with the realization that the things we do, see and hear are out of bounds in
God's eyes. My prayer is that everyone will come to recognize that the solutions begins with "me."
