"Happy 237th Birthday, America"

Last Thursday's holiday has been known as the Fourth of July and Independence Day. July 4th has been celebrated as a federal holiday in the United States since 1941, but the tradition of Independence Day celebrations goes back to the 18th century and the American Revolution (1775-83). In June 1776, representatives of the 13 colonies, then fighting in the Revolutionary War, discussed a resolution that would declare their independence from Great Britain. On July 2nd, the Continental Congress voted in favor of independence, and two days later its delegates adopted the Declaration of Independence, a historic document drafted by Thomas Jefferson. From 1776 until the present day, July 4th has been celebrated as the birth of American independence, with typical festivities ranging from fire- works, parades and concerts to more casual family gatherings and barbecues.

Let us never forget that there is much more to July 4th than a day off from work, hot dogs, barbecue, gatherings of friends and fireworks. July 4, 1776 is a day that will stand forever as a monument to the freedoms that the United States of America enjoys. Freedoms such as no other nation had known.

Among those freedoms that our forefathers required is the right we have to freely meet together and worship God this morning. We must not for- get where we would have been in the absence of the sacrifices that our founders made, not only for their own generation but also for all those down the stream of time that will benefit from those sacrifices. Let us praise God for blessing the United States of America as the greatest nations on earth.
